From Screen to Sea

After six years walking, paddling, and cycling the length of the Trans Canada Trail while filming 500 Days in the Wild, Dianne Whelan completed one of the most ambitious wilderness journeys ever documented in Canada.

For those who followed the project, the film became something deeper—a reminder of the vastness, beauty, and fragility of the landscapes that shape this country.

This expedition to Haida Gwaii carries the exploration forward—this time by sea.

A Wild New Chapter

The Expedition

Departing on Canada Day, this small-group expedition explores the protected waters of Gwaii Haanas aboard Maple Leaf, a heritage schooner built in 1904.

With just eight guests aboard, the voyage offers rare access to remote coastlines, ancient village sites, and thriving marine ecosystems.

Zodiac excursions, kayaking, shoreline walks, and wildlife encounters shape each day.

Filmmaker Dianne Whelan joins the voyage as Artist-in-Residence, sharing reflections from her work and the journey behind 500 Days in the Wild.

Discover Haida Gwaii

At the edge of the Pacific, Haida Gwaii is one of the most culturally and ecologically significant regions in Canada.

Often called the “Galápagos of the North,” the islands are home to ancient temperate rainforests, rich marine ecosystems, and the living culture of the Haida Nation.

Within Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve, visitors encounter monumental village sites, watchmen guardians, abundant wildlife, and landscapes shaped by thousands of years of human and natural history.

Maple Leaf Adventures offers expeditions to Haida Gwaii across the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
Voyages are offered aboard Maple Leaf, our historic schooner designed for intimate exploration with just eight guests, and Cascadia, our luxury expedition catamaran offering expanded comfort and access to the wild coast.

Sail Aboard the Maple Leaf

Travelling under sail aboard Maple Leaf offers a style of expedition shaped by wind, weather, and the rhythm of the coast.

Exploring by small ship allows access to remote shorelines and quiet anchorages far beyond the reach of roads.

With only eight guests aboard, the voyage unfolds at a natural pace, with time to explore ashore, watch wildlife, and gather on deck to share stories inspired by the places we visit.

Evenings often end around the table or under sail, as conversation turns to the landscapes, cultures, and journeys that bring us here.
