Expedition Notes: Whale Soup

Maple Leaf is currently cruising through the abundant fjords of Southeast Alaska. Naturalist Alison Watt reports:

We’re heading through misty straits today, still euphoric from our day at Pack Creek yesterday with almost a dozen grizzlies, including moms and cubs, gnawing down the summer’s first salmon feasts. We are in whale soup up here; started our trip with a pod of seven resident orca. We’ve had some great humpback sightings too and spent a couple of hours with ten whales bubble-net feeding, giant heads emerging with mouths wide open, giving everyone great views of baleen! Another highlight was a young male sea otter, who climbed up out of the kelp at Brothers Island to do some intense grooming, just feet from our zodiacs.
