British Columbia’s craft brewing scene is rich with history. Craft Beer historian Greg Evans joins us each year on our autumn Craft Beer Culinary Cruise, where his knowledge for local beer is complemented by coastal explorations in the Gulf Islands. Although we enjoy over 50 types of craft beer on our Craft Beer Cruise aboard tugboat Swell, we’ve asked a few of our crew to narrow down their favorites.
Kevin Smith: As an owner and captain of Maple Leaf, Kevin has an obvious bias to Maple Leaf’s new ISA brewed by Spinnakers, but his love for a good Hefeweizen points him to Howe Sound‘s King Heffy. This wheat beer is brewed in Squamish, BC.
James Maine: Chef James not only enjoys a good beer, but enjoys cooking with it too. Although he said it is nearly impossible to decide, he managed to narrow it down to Tofino Brewing Co.’s Kelp Stout. Yes, you heard that right. A full bodied ale brewed with locally harvested seaweed. #sowestcoast
Terese Ayre: Years of being a deckhand aboard our Tall Sails and Ales, or Craft Beer Culinary Cruise as it is now called, has strengthened Terese’s love for craft beer. Phillips Brewery’s well known Blue Buck ale is her standby, but she has recently taken a liking to Driftwood’s Blackstone Porter. The Blackstone Porter is a seasonal beer with specialty chocolate and coffee malts.
