Thrilled to see that west coast artist Emily Carr is the feature on Google’s home page today. It is her birthday.

This important Canadian artist – a very determined person if I ever knew of one – has influenced painters for generations, won a Governor General’s award for her writing.

Perhaps most importantly, she was the first to convey the energy and life-force of the west coast forest as well as the presence of aboriginal communities and traditions.

She was not well recognized during her lifetime for her work, but now she is recognized as one of the leading Canadian painters of all time. And, she accomplished all this as a woman in the first half of the 20th century!

Emily documented her travels along the coast in her entertaining books, and we enjoy reading from her writings about visiting Haida village sites in Gwaii Haanas when we land on those very same beaches ourselves.

You can view Emily’s work here.

You can buy her books here.

You can read about our Haida Gwaii trips here.

Happy birthday, Emily Carr!
